What I do.

I operate a small internet business called Bluegrass Apparels but in my spare time I involve myself in various radio related activities.

As the president of the Derby City Radioactives it is my responsibility to among other things manage the club radio nets, recruit new members and make decisions concerning club membership fees, membership requirements and member conduct rules. I'm assisted in these tasks by our club vice president and our club technician.

I'm also a member of the oldest ham radio club in the area, the Amateur Radio Transmitting Society of Louisville (ARTS).

I used to be a  member of the Louisville METRO-REACT Team until my membership expired and i haven't had the money to renew it. As a REACT member my primary activity was monitoring CB emergency channel 9 for emergency and traveler assistance calls along with monitoring local police, fire and EMS frequencies on my scanner for the purpose of gathering and relaying information concerning road hazards/delays and weather hazards to the motoring public. I still do this and since I begain monitoring channel 9 in April 2005 I have handled over 200 calls.

As a member of the Jefferson County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) organization, I receive training on the use of amateur radio during emergencies and assist with communications for agencies like the American Red Cross and the National Weather Service.

My job as a member of the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service is pretty much the same as A.R.E.S. but under federal regulations, if the President invokes the War Powers Act and all routine amateur radio communication is suspended, only R.A.C.E.S. operators may transmit on the amateur bands and only if they are part of the relief operations.

Locally Louisville Emergency Management has outlined in it's Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) that only R.A.C.E.S. operators would be used to serve Metro Government in a communications emergency and A.R.E.S. would only be used for less criticle tasks.

As a National Weather Service ceritifed SKYWARN severe storm spotter my main purpose is to observe and report severe weather phenomenon to the local National Weather Service office including but not limited to: Tornados, Funnel Clouds, Wall Clouds, Damaging Winds and Large Hail.

As a member of the Louisville METRO CERT Team I have received training in disaster preparedness, disaster response, fire safety and basic fire supression, light search and rescue, basic first aid, disaster medical operations, disaster psychology and other areas. The purpose of CERT is to provide basic emergency services to disaster victims until professional responders can arrive. For more info go to the CERT website.
