One ARES group constructed this tower trailer for it's emergency communications needs. It includes a portable generator as well as a repeater.

Many EMCOMM groups build these "box stations" that run off an internal or external battery or AC / DC power. These well built setups can do 50 watts or more and with a good antenna are every bit as good as a permanently installed station.

Over the last few years the American Red Cross has been building what they call ECRVs (Emergency Communications Response Vehicles). These ECRVs are VARY well equiped with $150,000 in radio, telephone, computer and microwave communications equipment.
There are currently eight ECRVs and all are equiped with HF, VHF and UHF radios that will operate on 160 meter through 70 centimeter ham bands as well as CB, GMRS and public safety communication bands.
